Our top priority at The Spotted Dog is to breed beautiful, healthy moyen poodle puppies and to bring out the best traits in their coloring, temperament and personality.
Why “spotted” dog you ask. . . because we love big, beautiful, parti spots on poodles.
We are a small poodle puppy hobby breeder located in Ellensburg, Washington. We are about 100 miles east of Seattle and 2 hours from SeaTac Airport. Being a moyen parti poodle breeder is a fulfillment of a lifelong dream of ours and raising poodles is a complete joy.
“Moyen” is the French word for the fourth size of poodle in France. The remainder of Europe refers to them as “Kleins” since their size falls in between the miniature and standard poodle. The standard for moyen poodles is a weight between 20 and 35 pounds and a height of 15 to 18 inches.
Experts believe the poodle may have originated in central Europe or Russia. The modern traits of this breed developed in France.
Parti Colored Poodles
You probably know that poodles come in a wide range of colors. This includes solid blacks, grays, silvers, browns, apricots, creams and other variations. But did you know that the poodle has a long history that has been featured in royal artwork since the 1500’s. Poodles were most often painted as having two colors which today is commonly called “parti” colored.
Parti poodles have a coat that has a predominant color broken by patches of one or more other colors. The most common colors include black and white, brown and white, silver and white and brindle and white.
There is also a variation of parti poodles that have a unique pattern called tuxedo. Tuxedo poodles have a solid color jacket with a white tux front and white under belly. Some of these tuxedo pups even have white socks.
The name poodle has its roots in an old German word meaning “to splash about.” This is a reference to their fondness for water – hence their famous cuts. The poofy ankles, wrist, and chest aren’t just random designs, they assisted poodles in being able to swim more efficiently and effectively.
We love poodles in all shapes, sizes and degrees of poofiness, but we prefer to groom our crew without puff balls and shaved noses – we love the overall fuller “puppy cut” look.
